Modern Networks for Rookies

Nowadays, many different types of nets are available that provide several different services. We have the telephone network, the radio network, the television network and of course the internet. All the previous activities depend on networking technologies. People use these networks to connect and exchange useful or entertaining information. Most people use several different networks every day without ever thinking how they work. Today networks are a big part of our lives and most of us do not even think what it would be like if the nets did not exist.

Twenty years ago network technology required separate and dedicated lines for voice, video and computer data communications. All the nets used a different kind of device in order to access the net. For example, phones, televisions, computers used different technologies and separate dedicated networks in order to exchange information. But what if users want to use all of these network services simultaneously?

Modern technologies create a revolutionary net that carries more than one type of service. The new converged networks are capable of transferring voice, video and data services over the same physical medium or network structure.

The new network appliances utilize much better the capabilities of converged information networks. Everybody that has a broadband connection can watch live video broadcasts on a simple computer or make a telephone call over the Internet.

Networks come in all sizes. The smallest net involves only two network capable devices. For instance we can connect two personal computers. A big network can have thousands or even millions of devices. The networks that we install in small offices or homes are called SOHO networks. SOHO networks enable sharing of resources, like printers, music, movies and other files between a few local devices.

Many companies use large networks in order to promote and sell products, order goods, and communicate with clients. Modern networks provide more efficient and cheap communication than traditional forms of communication. Regular mail and long distance phone calls are much more expensive, less reliable and much slower.

At the present time, internet is considered "the network of all networks" because it connects thousands of other smaller networks. As you probably already know, millions of users connect to this network every day and exchange information's.

What everyday tasks do users perform on the Internet? Well they can do many things, for example they can search for Jobs, go for shopping, get directions, paying bills, check the weather, read the news, correspond and send emails and so forth.
